There is something so special about photographing a newborn in the family's home. While it doesn't work for some people - and that's okay - I love it because I think it helps the whole family feel relaxed, especially if the older siblings are still young children themselves. But it's also a big deal to invite a photographer into your home soon after having a new baby so I don't take that honor lightly!
I love getting to work with repeat clients and seeing how excited the older children are! The oldest child met me at the door with a photo she had drawn for me :) It's the sweetest thing in the world!

Whether it is your first or sixth child, a new baby is exciting news that you want to share! But how do you manage the spread of this joyous news in today's day and age of social media and minute by minute updates? I have some suggestions for you!
It's not often that you meet someone for the first time and discover that you actually have some shared history! I am also continually amazed by the mothers that I get to serve who are welcoming me into their home in the first week after having a new baby!
Last but not least, the babies got their own style guide too! You might wonder if newborn sessions are really different enough to warrant their own guide. Why can't the family guide work for both. Well, for one thing, it's a whole different set of photos and for another, newborn sessions are run very differently than family sessions, even if a family session has an infant.
Newborn photos are important and special but planning is crucial to them going smoothly. You want to have as much planned in advance because after the baby is born, you don't want to be worrying about photos! I have a few tips to help your photo session be a success!
This session included a first for me. It's the first time I've communicated with the dad for arranging a newborn session! I was so excited to hear that this sweet family was expecting another baby and honored that they reached out to me again.
I'm starting a mini-series on what to expect at each of my sessions! If you've never worked with a professional photographer before, knowing what to expect can help make the experience more enjoyable. Even if you have worked with one before, maybe my way of doing things is different! Whatever your experience level, I hope this series gives some helpful insights into what you can expect when working with me! We are starting off with precious newborns, since I just did a session recently and they are on the brain :)
There is something so special about newborn at-home lifestyle sessions. Photographing a family in the comfort of their own home, with the newest member of the family, and surrounded by all the things that make them THEM. Colette's newborn session was an absolute joy, especially since my favorite newborn sessions are the ones that have older siblings! You never know what gems you might get when a toddler is involved :)
Whether it is her first baby or her fifth, moms can use help when they bring a new little one home. I would almost argue that they can use more help the more kids they already have but no matter what, you can be a blessing to that mother with a brand new baby.
There is a stereotype that dads don't love the idea of photos. If there wasn't some truth to it, we wouldn't have the stereotype. Those don't come out of thin air. However, I want to make a case that photos with dad are some of the the most important photos a child can have. (You'll also get to travel through my quest to find my editing style :)

Hi! I'm Sarah!
I am a natural light portrait photographer. I've been taking photos since 2014 and would eat a smoothie from Tropical Smoothie Cafe for lunch everyday if I could. Thank you so much for stopping by. I blog about sessions, things I'm learning, stuff in my life, and information for YOU, my client. If you like what you see around the site, I'd love to work with you! I'd also love to connect with you on Instagram. I'm @sarah_jayne_photo :) Archives
