While I definitely get your traditional posed portraits, my favorite part of family sessions is the interaction images! These are loosely posed - I give a direction for you to follow and then I step back and capture the interaction - and slightly candid. It's these photos that usually end up having the most genuine smiles, which families LOVE!

It's been four years since I had this lovely family in front of my camera and things have changed a lot! Six kids 5 and under requires some creativity at times, because they want to MOVE! Greenmead is a great spot, since there is lots of open space.
I make no secret of the fact that I love doing large family sessions and this one was no exception! Nothing warms my heart more than a family who loves to be together. It's even better when that family is gathering to celebrate mom/grandma/great-grandma's 90th birthday! What a milestone!
This family is always so much fun to photograph! And what a special session this was for them! I loved that Mom thought to do these photos at home because of the changes that are coming soon.
Can you feel the love tonight? You definitely could with this family. They were so sweet and so much fun! Extended family sessions are some of my favorite and this session reminded me why that is.
It's been over two years since I had this lovely family in front of my camera and I've been looking forward to it all year! You'll recognize some of these people because I am blessed enough to work with them a lot. We had an amazing time and the weather was absolutely gorgeous. I was praying hard for no rain and it held off until the next morning for us. Thank you, Lord!
I am SO EXCITED to unveil the new and improved SJP Portrait Session Style Guides! Each of my sessions now has a specific style guide customized to that experience. Updated with even more information and now including pictures, this is a resource I am absolutely thrilled to be able to offer to my clients and I'm giving sneak peeks into the kinds of things that are included here on my blog! Today we are going to see a few pages from the Family Portrait Session Style Guide.
To make family photos a success, planning is key. The more people you add, the more planning you need! Large family photos don't have to be stressful if you keep a few things in mind. With a little prep work, pictures can be a breeze!
So many wedding photographers dread family formal time. I get it. A wedding day is super creative and then family formals seem to kill that creativity. Plus, you don't have the time to be creative. It makes sense that it's the least favorite part of the day for so many wedding photographers. But as a portrait photographer, I LOVE large families because I feel like I can be very creative!
"Sarah! I need to hire you!" I love how my friend Kenna goes about her conversations :) It makes me smile! Another thing that makes me smile is families who celebrate and do life together. It was an honor and privilege to make Kenna's grandmother's dreams come true of having this family photo taken.

Hi! I'm Sarah!
I am a natural light portrait photographer. I've been taking photos since 2014 and would eat a smoothie from Tropical Smoothie Cafe for lunch everyday if I could. Thank you so much for stopping by. I blog about sessions, things I'm learning, stuff in my life, and information for YOU, my client. If you like what you see around the site, I'd love to work with you! I'd also love to connect with you on Instagram. I'm @sarah_jayne_photo :) Archives
