January was exciting for me because I was very creative and got to set up some ideas that I'm super happy about!! Let's jump in and see what January held and how it went versus what I expected. (I wish it had been as snowy as the picture :)

I've typically heard of generational trends in a negative light. Things like histories of addiction or divorce or other medical problems. But are there good generational trends? I think there can be and my family has several.
Do you ever wonder how your life might have been different if something major had happened or not happened? I sometimes wonder how I would be if I had not been homeschooled. We'll never know, but I do have a few thoughts on what may have happened. I'm not intending this to be a bashing of public and private school but I do want to show some of the tremendous benefits of homeschooling.
It's always funny to me to discover the preconceived notions people have about homeschooling. I've heard it all. Something I've noticed too, is that a person's idea of what homeschooling "should" be is often what keeps them from doing it. They say, "oh, I could never homeschool" because they think they could never do it like [whatever example they are holding up in their head]. But guess what? There is no one right way to homeschool!
This is going to sound funny, but I"m as surprised by this announcement as you are!
Seriously, this was not on my radar as something I would do in 2023, but when it popped into my head I thought, "why not?", and so here we are. I know that you don't *have* to have a word picked before January 1st, but I always like going into the new year with that detail settled. So I was getting a little nervous as December kept ticking away and I wasn't sure what word I would be focusing on in 2023.
Eventually, I felt pretty sold on one word but then I realized that I needed a companion word for it. What would capture my thoughts and perspective? It was pretty cool to see the little things that came up in life, confirming what I was thinking. All the Bible verses I read or heard New Year's weekend had to do with the words I was planning to do. I consider that a sign. Without further ado, my words for 2023 are... I had 20 non-fiction books in my planner to read in 2022. Ten were just general non-fiction and ten were business related. I read exactly two of those twenty books. With moving and all my trips, I just didn't have a ton of time to devote to non-fiction. I really need uninterrupted time so I can focus on what I'm reading and I didn't have a lot of that. I did end up reading 15 non-fiction books this year, which surprised me, and I'm glad of it. I'm also glad that I'm not frustrated with myself for not reading the books on my list. That shows some good growth!
My word for 2022 was "Embrace". You can read all about what I thought it would look like here, but I'll tell you right now, it didn't look much like that. As much as I try not to have expectations, I can't quite help it, so I just go into the new word knowing that it's not going to look like I thought :)
IT'S HERE!
2023. Man, does that look weird to anyone else? I feel like the last five years have flown by but also seem like ten years at the same time. 2018 seems like a life-time ago, but I also remember some events like they just happened. I have some hopes and dreams for things that I'd like to do this year, but I've learned to hold such plans very, very loosely. |
