Newborn photos are important and special but planning is crucial to them going smoothly. You want to have as much planned in advance because after the baby is born, you don't want to be worrying about photos! I have a few tips to help your photo session be a success! Book Your Photographer Early Contacting a photographer the week before your baby is due or right after they are born is not a great idea. Everyone is different but I would recommend around halfway through your pregnancy. If the photographer you want books well in advance, you will need to contact them even sooner! But you want enough time so that they can hold the time around your due date fairly open. Obviously, the final date is picked after your little one arrives :) Express Your Preferences And Desires To Your Photographer Do you want photos in the nursery? Do you want nursing photos? Is there a pose or prop you are dying to have? Express those desires and preferences to your photographer. Knowing advance means we don't have to ask you the day of the session and you have to make a decision. We want all of that worked out well in advance. Plan The Outfits & Props In Advance If you have older siblings, they can grow out of clothes quickly but you can pick out which outfits you want a week or two before you're due and TAKE PHOTOS OF THEM on your phone. Then you can't forget what you decided AND your husband can find the clothes and dress the kids for you. Same thing with props. If you can't collect them and put them all together in once place in advance, take photos and maybe collect them the night before. (Have your husband or and older kid do it ;) When To Dress Baby I recommend dressing your newborn while I'm getting things set up and after you've fed them and given them a clean diaper. This helps minimize the chance of them making a mess all over their outfit! While I'm photographing your baby, you're welcome to finish getting yourself ready! Only Clean What You Absolutely Have To If we are doing the session in your house, you want things to be tidy so that the photos look good but we don't want you to be stressed about cleaning the whole house. Most homes have two living areas. We want to be in the one with the most natural light so just focus on having that room picked up and also the nursery, if you are having photos done in there as well. Don't worry about the rest of the house. Your photographer is not expecting a Martha Stewart home. Do you know someone who just announced that they're pregnant? Share these tips with them! And let me know if you have tips from your own experiences with newborn photography. This is not an exhaustive list and I'd love to add your tips as well!
