It's here! There is a lot of controversy about Halloween. I know families who do not do anything and others who go all out. My family has done a variety of things.

I think this thing gets bigger every year.
There was a catapult. Enough said. Seeing the kids' faces and all the joy is one of the best parts of my job. The little ones are just interacting with the world. Older ones are able to actually appreciate the costumes and decorations. I love seeing the creativity of the costumes and what people come up with. Let me tell you, there were a lot of Wonder Woman outfits this year :) I want to add, the lighting with something like this is super challenging. You're going from outside to inside, to an even darker sanctuary; switching between flash and no flash... it's a challenge. So this won't look as comprehensive as my usual work. Event photography is an entirely different beast from portrait work. I have lots of hobbies. I like to play games, scrapbook, listen to baseball/watch my brother and cousins play, hang out with friends. You know, normal things that most people like to do. (With the exception of baseball :) But what is my favorite thing to do when I'm not taking pictures? That's not a hard choice. In fact, this might be the easiest "what's your favorite..." question I could be asked.
The weather is getting colder and it's the perfect time for lifestyle sessions! What is a lifestyle session? It can be tailored to just about anything, but in a general sense, it is having a photographer come into your home and photographing you doing life.
It was not supposed to rain.
The day was cold and overcast but it wasn't supposed to rain. The sprinkles began almost as soon as I arrived at the location. I'd never been to Mayberry before, so I arrived early to scout locations. I started praying for the rain to hold off, just for a little bit so we could do this session. I've come to an interesting realization. I'm not afraid or self-conscious when I'm behind the viewfinder. You might wonder why that is noteworthy. It's because I am VERY, extremely anxious about being in front of people. As in, I've gotten sick from nerves. I hate having a lot of attention on me. Public speaking? No way. But somehow, I am able to ignore people when I have my camera. Why is that?
Congratulations! You now know all the elements of the exposure triangle. I hope that things are making sense. I can say from my experience that the more you play with the settings, the more and more how it all works together becomes clear.
When I finally got around to figuring out what this "hack" was and making my camera do it, I was instantly hooked. I knew I'd never go back to how I was shooting before. This was a game changer and I wished I'd done it much sooner.
This magical change? Back-button focus. I was putting some papers away and rediscovered a little book called "Me & My Friends - The Book of Us". One of the activities in this book was to have friends write you notes to be opened at some point in the future.
I pulled the book out to look at the notes I've already opened, and discovered that there was one to open this year! (That's the thing about them is, you forget they are in there and when to open them). |
Hi! I'm Sarah!
I am a natural light portrait photographer. I've been taking photos since 2014 and would eat a smoothie from Tropical Smoothie Cafe for lunch everyday if I could. Thank you so much for stopping by. I blog about sessions, things I'm learning, stuff in my life, and information for YOU, my client. If you like what you see around the site, I'd love to work with you! I'd also love to connect with you on Instagram. I'm @sarah_jayne_photo :) Archives
