Our first family trip in a while was to Hocking Hills, Ohio. We were first told about this place a few years ago but then in the last six months or so it has com up a LOT and my parents decided that we needed to go see what all the fuss was about. Boy, was it all were were told and more!

My family has lots of fun together. When we were younger (and were all home for dinner every night), it was common for me to laugh so hard and so much that I got hiccups many evenings!! Of course, I had to keep track of the funny things we say and I am going to share some of those with you today! Once again, please realize there is context and background to these that you don't have and I cannot always give. Enjoy!
I have not been to Silver Lake Sand Dunes since I was 6 or 7 years old. I basically don't remember the last trip, except that the dunes were very tall and when we went horseback riding, the horse almost threw me off (it probably was more traumatic to my little self than it actually was).
Our parents always give us something together for our birthdays. Sometimes it is a thing, like a Wii, and other times it is a trip. This year it was Silver Lake Sand Dunes (they also are calling it their 25th anniversary trip). I wouldn't say I generally have a super exciting Fourth of July, but this year was very odd. We didn't see our normal friends and family, we didn't go swimming, we didn't have baseball, we didn't have a parade. But we substituted! It was different and I wish it wasn't but it wasn't bad.
You should be a tourist in your own state, right? Well, one of my favorite places to go within my own state is the west side and Lake Michigan. It's amazing how close it really is. My dad and brothers were supposed to be at our church district youth gathering the end of June/beginning of July and when that got cancelled we decided to do a small family trip. The guys all had the time off anyway so we didn't want to waste that. It was such a relaxing weekend!!
That photo is not me and my brothers but it could be (minus the blond hair). I have two younger brothers which has been good and bad, depending on the day and what they are doing :) But seriously, I love my brothers and I have so many good memories of growing up with them.
I've now crossed the Mississippi four times in my life! Some people were teasing me about how I wanted Mom to drive so I could really look at the River when I should be used to big bodies of water (Great Lakes, anyone?) but a river is just different and this is a very iconic river!
I also have now been in Illinois, Iowa, and Nebraska. The latter two are much hillier than I would have expected and there are a TON of windmills (sorry, wind turbines) along the way. You might be wondering, "why Nebraska for a vacation?" My answer is, "friends and commitments." My family had the opportunity, thanks to Thrivent Financial, to go see the Detroit Zoo Lights this year. We had never been before and I saw some Instagram stories from a friend who went, but I didn't really know what to expect. I was very impressed with the display!
Thanksgiving is a fun time of year. We spend it with my dad's family and this the only time of year we see them. In 2015, our Thanksgiving was very different.
Family history and family artifacts are pretty cool to me. We have some beautiful glasses that are 100+ years old!! I just think it is so incredible to think how many people used or owned something and all it "saw". The old "if walls could talk" idea.
Recently, my grandmother found a box of letters. Not just any letters. These were written from her mother to her father back in WWII when he was away in D.C. I think they might span a little bit after that as well. You see that handwriting! Both sides of the paper; multiple pages. That's the kind of letters these are! What a find! |
