It's almost December and I've been blogging here for a year! That seems crazy to me.
I don't know about you, but my family has little traditions this time of year, from the silly to the really special. I'm going to share some of them with you and I'd love to hear about what you do with your family. Growing up, I heard about kids who were badly affected by social media. I didn't have any accounts, but my friends who went to public and private school would talk about that sort of thing.
It makes me sad that some people deal with hurt from their social media accounts, but I have found a wonderful community. Being thankful is a good habit to get into. We should be doing it all year long. But it's good and right to have a time of year dedicated to the focus of thanks.
We have it pretty good here in America and it's so easy to take things for granted. Since we have the essentials and necessities, other things become "necessary" and we chase after things we think we need or deserve that really are extra blessings. I'm as guilty of it as the next person. I don't think that when Thanksgiving was founded, it was intentionally placed before Christmas, but I think there is such value in stopping to reflect on all that we have, all our blessings, before we get to a holiday that has become so much about getting more things. That's obviously not the point of Christmas, but for our culture, it's definitely a time to accumulate more things. I'm thankful for this journey that I'm on. I'm thankful for the photographers who have offered up their knowledge so I can maybe make fewer mistakes than they did and get my business up and running faster. I'm thankful for my family and friends who support and encourage me in life and all I do. I'm thankful for YOU! For taking the time to be interested in my journey and my mission. I'm thankful for all the wonderful families who entrust me with the incredible honor of capturing them as they are and freezing a moment in time for them. Happy Thanksgiving! For non-photographers, or photographers who haven't learned about light yet, it can be kind of confusing to hear about "good" and "bad" light. Now, I will preface this by saying that your style greatly affects how you view light. I am developing a style in which I like clear, bright, well-lit, faces and skin tones and that informs what I think of as "good" and "bad" light.
Labels make me wary. There are some that I proudly wear, like Christian, homeschooler, woman. But labels have a sneaky way of becoming your identity, so I try hard not to accept too many of them. However, I am a fan of personality tests because they are very helpful in understanding people. It even helps me understand myself.
We all have people in our lives who we would point to and say, "they helped shape me into who I am." I am a blessed girl in that I have that for my personal and professional life!
It snowed on Friday.
We were expected to get flurries. Yes, and then some. It didn't stick to the concrete but it did cling to the grass and trees. This was a thick, wet snow. I was THRILLED!!!! Photographers are crazy.
Really, we are. Do not be surprised to see your photographer do bizarre things a make a fool of herself to get the perfect shot. You know those adorable pictures of the little kids laughing out loud. Someone, often the photographer, is being ridiculous to elicit those genuine smiles. I'm still working on my bag of tricks because, let's be honest, I'm not naturally able to be ridiculous in public. (Though at home, ask my brothers. On second thought, don't ask them). But I've still done some crazy things in pursuit of the shot I wanted. I'm going to get a little deep today. This may seem to come out of left field, but there is a purpose and a reason.
A gentlemen at my church died last Friday. He was a grandfather but not that old. Cancer is no respecter of age. This man was a founding member of our church. His grandsons are my age and a year older; his granddaughters are several years older and a year or two younger. I've grown up with them. I've walked alongside them through other tragedies and each time I wonder how to help. What do you say? What can you do? |
Hi! I'm Sarah!
I am a natural light portrait photographer. I've been taking photos since 2014 and would eat a smoothie from Tropical Smoothie Cafe for lunch everyday if I could. Thank you so much for stopping by. I blog about sessions, things I'm learning, stuff in my life, and information for YOU, my client. If you like what you see around the site, I'd love to work with you! I'd also love to connect with you on Instagram. I'm @sarah_jayne_photo :) Archives
