Some kids LOVE being in front of the camera and others... well, they're not as sure. Every one of them is different and in some cases, it just takes a bit of time to warm up to things. Other times, they just won't have it. No matter what, my job is to get your photos of your children so how do I get portraits of little ones who don't want to cooperate? It just takes some creativity.

Journaling is such a great habit for your kids. In the moment, it allows them to process an event and the emotions that go along with it. In the future, it let's them remember the feelings and even things that they may have otherwise forgotten. It's also a discipline in consistency and helps them learn handwriting and communication skills. I could keep going with the many benefits of journaling but how to you start your kids off on this (hopefully) life-long habit?
I am continually amazed by the creativity of people. The things that people can turn into a business that bless their clients so well AND benefit the least of these is mind-blowing and inspiring. Mama, Sing My Song is one of those businesses.
I've worked with a LOT of children through the years. I've seen a lot of different parenting styles and a lot of personalities. I could write for a long time about my observations and things I've picked up on, but there is one trick I want to share today for people dealing with kids who are stubborn or demanding.
I've done a LOT of babysitting in my life and you know kids love to be read to. Some children's books are quite mind-numbing, if we are being honest. I find myself adjusting things to not have to read "he said/she said" at the end of every sentence!!!! But through the years, I have found some books that are enjoyable for the adults to read as much as they are fun for the kids to hear.
I've always loved working with little kids since I can remember. That is one thing that drew me to portrait and family photography! I love capturing their personalities and seeing the way they view the world. It's the greatest joy. So what makes a children's session special? Why might you want one? Is it right for you?
Rhys is ONE!!! Where did that year go? I am quickly becoming convinced that rescheduled sessions are never bad because by not doing his photos closer to his birthday, we got to incorporate snow and Christmas decor!
This session was made possible because I have a 28mm lens and I know how to use my flash! Indoor sessions are so much more fun now! Do you have a lot of boxes left over from Christmas? Don't throw them out! And don't recycle them either (at least not yet). Boxes are a child's favorite toy, didn't you know? Next year, you can save a lot of money :) But seriously, save those boxes and give them to your kids and watch what happens.
If you spend even a short amount of time around kids, you know they say the cutest and funniest things. These are a collection of things that either my family or friends of mine have said. There are some that I wish I could share but they either require a certain voice or too much backstory to covey here but I hope you enjoy what I share here and that you get a laugh or two. Hopefully they at least make you smile :)
I don't take bribes but I totally support bribing kids!!! Sometimes you need something extra to get kids to do a photo session, especially between the ages of 2-4. But bribery is an art and there is a certain time to pull out the treats.

Hi! I'm Sarah!
I am a natural light portrait photographer. I've been taking photos since 2014 and would eat a smoothie from Tropical Smoothie Cafe for lunch everyday if I could. Thank you so much for stopping by. I blog about sessions, things I'm learning, stuff in my life, and information for YOU, my client. If you like what you see around the site, I'd love to work with you! I'd also love to connect with you on Instagram. I'm @sarah_jayne_photo :) Archives
