I don't take bribes but I totally support bribing kids!!! Sometimes you need something extra to get kids to do a photo session, especially between the ages of 2-4. But bribery is an art and there is a certain time to pull out the treats. I still remember taking photos with my cousins when they were little. At first, we would try the plea, "these are for Grammy and you want to give Grammy nice photos, don't you?" If that failed, chicken nuggets usually worked. Because my cousins could be quite obstinate at times, sometimes threatened punishment was required but usually a bribe worked :)
Notice the progression - do it for someone they love, then a special treat. We also don't want to be teaching that if they misbehave they get something they like. That's not the goal. What we want is incentive. Some parents will tell their kids before they even arrive that if they take good pictures and behave, then they get to have [fill in the blank]. Others will wait until there are signs of trouble to present the incentive. If you use candy, you could reward a child for a job well done in between each segment of the session (family, siblings, individuals). You know your kids best and know what works for them. When it comes to candy, I don't recommend chocolate unless it will be given AFTER the session. Too much chance for a mess or a stain. The best candies for during the session are things like Sweet Tarts, Smarties, or Nerds. Small pieces that are eaten quickly and don't stain things. We don't want stains on clothes or lips :) Common bribes:
Have you had experience bribing your kids to do photos? What has worked or not worked for your children?

Hi! I'm Sarah!
I am a natural light portrait photographer. I've been taking photos since 2014 and would eat a smoothie from Tropical Smoothie Cafe for lunch everyday if I could. Thank you so much for stopping by. I blog about sessions, things I'm learning, stuff in my life, and information for YOU, my client. If you like what you see around the site, I'd love to work with you! I'd also love to connect with you on Instagram. I'm @sarah_jayne_photo :) Archives
