I've come to an interesting realization. I'm not afraid or self-conscious when I'm behind the viewfinder. You might wonder why that is noteworthy. It's because I am VERY, extremely anxious about being in front of people. As in, I've gotten sick from nerves. I hate having a lot of attention on me. Public speaking? No way. But somehow, I am able to ignore people when I have my camera. Why is that? First, I will say that I know people aren't looking at me really when I'm taking photos. But based on everything else I've done in my life, knowing doesn't really help the nerves. I still freak out. Usually.
When I photographed my cousin's wedding, I was a tiny bit self-conscious but it quickly went away. I did second shooting for my neighbor and was out on the dance floor during the special dances, almost totally unaware of the people sitting all around the room. So what's different? I think I've pinned it down to two things. First, I love what I'm doing. Photography is a passion for me and I love every minute of it. Second, when you are taking photos, the only world that exists for you is what you see through your viewfinder. You are experiencing the moment through that very narrow point of view. In effect, I get lost in the moment. I am so focused on what's in front of me and doing everything I need to do to capture it, that I am able to tune out the people around me. Now, when I was on that dance floor, I was aware of the people, but it was almost like they weren't important. I had a job to do and I just focused on that. It's the weirdest phenomenon to be somewhere and know that people could be looking at me (even though I know they probably aren't) and really not care. When I have my camera, I am in the zone and my clients, my subject, are all that matters. Everything else fades in the background.
