It was not supposed to rain. The day was cold and overcast but it wasn't supposed to rain. The sprinkles began almost as soon as I arrived at the location. I'd never been to Mayberry before, so I arrived early to scout locations. I started praying for the rain to hold off, just for a little bit so we could do this session. It seemed like the rain was lessening, I was already there, and the family was five minutes out so we decided to give it a go and see if maybe we could make things work. I have to say, the kids were such troopers. It was pretty miserable. I worked as fast as I could and the photos turned out well.
We had a backup date in case of rain so we decided to try again on the following Tuesday. This is one of those instances where what I thought was a ruination of my plans actually worked out wonderfully!! If it hadn't rained, we would have just done the shoot on the overcast day. That would have been TOTALLY fine and they would have gotten great photos. BUT, because we tried again, we got a beautiful sunny day that gave amazing glow. Just look at the difference in the two photos above. As always, when working with young children, you have to be flexible. On our first day, the second youngest girl didn't want her picture taken individually at all. Try two, she was willing to pose for a portrait! The baby was NOT interested in taking photos at all, but towards the end, she sat on her big sister's lap with some flowers and a leaf. No smiles still, but you work with what they give you. If I'd been thinking I would have had the boys jump in to get a photo of all the kids, but I'd already written off being able to get a picture of all of them, so I didn't think of it. Live and learn. I was really frustrated with the weather that first day, but then I got a gorgeous day on our second try. Lesson learned for sure. Thank you, kids, for being such great sports with the bad weather and for being so amazing at posing! You did a fantastic job! (Fun note: we went a little ways into the grass and apparently were standing in a deer bed! That was cool!)
