To make family photos a success, planning is key. The more people you add, the more planning you need! Large family photos don't have to be stressful if you keep a few things in mind. With a little prep work, pictures can be a breeze!
I always tell people that, when it comes to photos, you want to look like a fancy version of you. Makeup can be tricky because you need a little extra but also don't want to not look like yourself! What should you do?
Newborn photos are important and special but planning is crucial to them going smoothly. You want to have as much planned in advance because after the baby is born, you don't want to be worrying about photos! I have a few tips to help your photo session be a success!
I always encourage people to print their photos and display them so if you've done that, hooray! I'm so glad :) But now you have to decide where to put that photo. As you're looking around your home at the options, there is one thing that you need to keep in mind.
Hats are super cute but can you use them in your senior portraits? The answer is YES!! And guess what? Girls AND guys can rock hats! Let's talk about a few ways to incorporate hats into your senior session.
The location you choose plays a hugely important role in your final images. If your goal is that light and airy look, then your backgrounds matter! While we definitely want pretty backgrounds, not all pretty backgrounds are created equal. It takes some time to learn to "see" with a photographer's eye, but that is why, not only do I educate, but I also make suggestions to clients and tell them why a certain place is not the best idea! While I'm always happy to offer locations, if you are thinking about some spots you'd like to take photos, here are some things to look for.
(Note: this post is for those who are after a light and airy look. If that is not your style, that's fine, but you probably won't find this post very helpful.) What should you incorporate into your senior portraits? Well, that depends on you! Today I'm offering you a BUNCH of ideas to jump-start your creativity. This list is not exhaustive but simply is meant to get you thinking. I'm also always available to talk through ideas with my seniors! Let's get the ideas flowing!
"She's so good with names!"
I could hear the surprise in their voice. I was working on a large family session and overheard this comment from one of the family members as I was directing people in and out of poses. Typically, when I do a large family session, I am meeting most of the individuals for the first time. However, I make it a priority to learn their names FAST! You may have heard photographers talking about documenting. Wedding photographers document a day and portrait photographers document a season of life. Documenting something is so much more than just taking photos. It's capturing moments and personalities. It's freezing time so that you can go back and remember who you were at a given point in history. This is why I take a lifestyle, candid approach to my sessions.

Hi! I'm Sarah!
I am a natural light portrait photographer. I've been taking photos since 2014 and would eat a smoothie from Tropical Smoothie Cafe for lunch everyday if I could. Thank you so much for stopping by. I blog about sessions, things I'm learning, stuff in my life, and information for YOU, my client. If you like what you see around the site, I'd love to work with you! I'd also love to connect with you on Instagram. I'm @sarah_jayne_photo :) Archives
