"She's so good with names!" I could hear the surprise in their voice. I was working on a large family session and overheard this comment from one of the family members as I was directing people in and out of poses. Typically, when I do a large family session, I am meeting most of the individuals for the first time. However, I make it a priority to learn their names FAST! Start Off On The Right Foot
As people arrive, I make it a point to introduce myself and learn their name. This happens in the parking lot, before the camera comes out. These people don't know me. They were told when and where to show up by the family member who booked me. I don't know what their past experiences have been with professional photography, but I want to do everything I can at the beginning to set them at ease. Why Names Are Important There are a few reasons why knowing the names of your clients is so important. For one thing, it makes instructions so much easier! Imagine working with 10-15 people and just saying "you go here and you go there". Those are NOT clear directions and will not help your clients relax. But equally important is that by using their names, you are making them feel important and comfortable. You're communicating to them that they are important to you and it creates an atmosphere of camaraderie. My goal is to make these strangers feel like I've been their friend for years! Learn And Use Names I will not tell you that this is easy for me. It's not. I don't always remember everyone's name or put the correct name with the correct person. But I don't think that matters in the long run. I think that making the effort is what matters. Clients are impressed that you are trying to learn and use their names and will forgive any mistakes. If you have to ask once or twice about a few names, that shows that you are human! Trust me, the more people involved, the more times you might have to ask :) I cannot stress how important I think it is to learn and use the names of your clients during the photo session. It is a very simple thing but it has a huge impact on their experience with us!
