We are getting overwhelmed with stuff. Minimalism is all the rage. But a lot of things have precious memories attached to them and it is painful to think about throwing them away. What do we do? I have a great solution for you! First, I do not believe that minimalism means not saving ANYTHING EVER. There may be some people with that mindset but I think it is more about being intentional and thinking through what we are keeping and why. If you really want to keep something, keep it! But for those things that you aren't sure you really need to keep or you don't really have room to keep it but you want to remember it... TAKE PHOTOS!!!
I know, what a shock that the photographer is advocating taking photos :) I am being completely serious though! I've talked before about saving your kids artwork by photographing it and then throwing the original away. You can do the same process with memory things. If you have documents, photography is an option, but scanning might be a better way to go. Letters, awards, certificates, etc are all great things to scan and then get rid of (assuming they aren't legal documents or important documents that need to be saved. Then you should have a digital copy IN ADDITION to the physical original). My family is slowly starting the process of thrifting for an eventual move. We've lived in the same house for 24 years!!!! To say we have a lot of stuff is an understatement. As we go through things, we are trying to be intentional about thinking, "does this need to move with us or be photographed and let go?". Are you ready to start the process? Great! The most important thing now is to have a good system for labeling and organizing the photos you take. If you can't find the memories, they aren't doing you a whole lot of good, now are they? Don't worry, I've got you covered there!
