I have not been to Silver Lake Sand Dunes since I was 6 or 7 years old. I basically don't remember the last trip, except that the dunes were very tall and when we went horseback riding, the horse almost threw me off (it probably was more traumatic to my little self than it actually was). Our parents always give us something together for our birthdays. Sometimes it is a thing, like a Wii, and other times it is a trip. This year it was Silver Lake Sand Dunes (they also are calling it their 25th anniversary trip). If you didn't know, Lake Michigan is windy and cold in April! I'm sure it's really different year to year but this year it was very cold and windy. Thankfully the sun was out and it did not rain!!!!
I rode the ATV a little bit and also rode around the dunes in the truck with my dad. I got up to 32 mph on the ATV, which is the fastest I've ever gone! The only thing keeping me from going faster were the bumps. I REALLY didn't want to get thrown off. (And I almost did a couple of times anyway!) I also did the "big dunes" (the south-bound only for those who know), but not the very biggest and I stayed to the side where it wasn't quite so steep. Still, it was kind of a big deal for me, who is not normally so adventurous. Yes, I did ride in a skirt on the first day. The second day I wore pants but only because I had gotten sand "burn" on my ankles and it didn't feel good. The skirt was fine otherwise. We also swam in the hotel pool each evening and played briefly on the merry-go-round that was outside. I tried to fly a kite but it didn't go well. It's not like it was a high-end kite or anything. Our truck suddenly decided to be finicky about starting while we were all the way inside the park at the beach!!! My dad is amazing and was able to overcome it each time to get it going again, even thought he doesn't know exactly what is wrong. We're just glad we didn't need a tow out of the dunes! Here are a few photos from the trip!
