She won't smile no matter what. He is throwing a temper-tantrum. You just wanted a nice photo and your kids won't cooperate. What do you do? I've had this happen. I had a little boy who was fine until we tried to pose and then he started screaming and crying. We got him to do the family photo but then he was just done.
Posed photos are beautiful and important to people, but I have found that the genuine smiles come out when kids get to play. Any instruction that gets them moving is good. Running, playing peek-a-boo, building a tower - it take their focus off the formality of photos and lets their personality shine through. Some of my favorite photos come when I have kids and families start interacting with each other; things I could never pose but are the most touching. Back to my screaming child. I suggested that we just let him play and I'd get some candid shots. He started playing with his blocks and trucks. I sat back and took pictures. It took about ten minutes before he was laughing and playing with me! Did the session go exactly as planned? No. Did he sit for photos with his sisters? No. But once again, best laid plans don't always translate to best pictures. If you are planning family pictures or a children session, factor into your timing plans some time for your kids to play at the beginning, ESPECIALLY if they are shy kids. If we can start by letting them explore or run or play, they get relaxed and are more likely to cooperate for a couple of posed shots. And if they simply won't, I can work around that, no problem! It might not turn out as planned, but it just might turn out better than planned :)
