Hiring a professional photographer is not a small investment. What makes it worthwhile? If you purchase albums or canvases, the investment is even more. What benefit do you get at the end? These are valid questions and it is smart to think things through before you invest that much money into something. Question #1 - Why should I hire a professional photographer over going to a studio? First, let me define what I mean by "studio". Many professionals have their own private studio but what I'm talking about here are places like Portrait Innovations, JC Penny, and Lifetouch. These are big companies with many photographers working for them and you probably won't work with the same one twice. In places like that, there is no relationship. You don't get guided help and you don't get a personal touch. There is not as much creativity with your portraits. A professional photographer works one on one with you, will help you with any decisions that need to be made, and will work with ideas and visions you had for your session.
This is the primary difference and what you're paying more for - a personalized and relational experience. A secondary benefit is style. Portrait studios don't have as much style variety. With professionals, you have lighter, darker, warmer, cooler, etc to choose from, as well as posed versus candid. There are so many choices that you are guaranteed to find someone who does exactly what you are looking for. Question #2 - Why should I purchase an album or canvas for my wall? Our lives exist online these days and most of our photos stay as digitals. I don't know about you, but one of my favorite things is looking at old photographs and paging through old photo albums. These are priceless heirlooms and they are tangible ways to showcase your memories. Imagine having an album of your family vacation out on your coffee table that you can show to anyone who comes over. Your family can relive an event or a year over and over again and share it with friends and future generations. As for canvases or prints, you spent the time and money to get really nice photos of your kids or your family taken and you should proudly display that in your home! Selfies and snapshots can stay in a drugstore album or as a digital but these are beautiful pieces of art that should be shown off! It would be a shame to have spent the money and time but not have the results in your home. Here's a final reason - if you are hoping to get a family photo at your reunion or next gathering or grab a quick photo of your kids on vacation, that can work, but it can also be forgotten. You are focused on other things at those times and rightfully so! Hiring a professional gives you a dedicated time for just photos and takes all the pressure off of you to get everyone posed and smiling. Who doesn't want less stress, am I right? These are the main questions people have for why they should invest in photography. Portrait studios definitely have their place and do good work. They are skilled and trained in what they do. I don't want to say they aren't professionals but they are very different from your solo photographer. My family got pictures taken in studios for years and I love the photos, in fact, one of my all-time favorite photos of myself was taken in a studio. However, I love the atmosphere of working one-on-one with a professional who feels like a friend. It puts me at ease and lets me relax and I don't know about you, but I take better pictures when I'm relaxed and at ease! Do you have other questions? I'd love to answer them for you! If you've used a professional photographer before, share your experience below so that others can hear about it!
