I am a portrait photographer. That's my specialty. But I shoot anything and everything. Why? Because that's how you grow. At this stage in my business, I am growing a clientele and a huge part of that is getting your name and your face out there. When I'm shooting an event, the people there are seeing me and when they see the pictures, they know who took them. Now, that doesn't mean that someone will book me, but the more I'm out there, the more likely it is that someone will think of me when they want to do family photos or when their child is graduating from high school.
I've done multiple church events and my friend's church puts the photos on their Facebook page. So, in theory, someone could inquire about who took the photos and be put in touch with me. Besides that, it gets me practice. I want to be shooting as often as I can, and if I just did portraits, I would not be shooting as often as I am by doing events and "other" things. By taking on projects that aren't in my professed niche, I'm getting exposure to different scenarios and gaining practice in various locations and with all kinds of lighting. That's huge in me learning and working things out. Another very large part of this is service. I have been given a gift and I believe it is my job to use it in service. Volunteering to photograph a VBS or something like that is being a good steward of my gifts. It's giving back. Yes, I'm in this to grow my business and make money, but I'm in it for the people more and I've been raised in the stewardship mindset, so it just makes sense to me that it flows into my work. I just thought I'd share with you why I do things that aren't my specialty. To summarize it in three words, it's for Exposure, Practice, and Service. (If I spent a lot of time, I might be able to come up with something clever for that, but I'm not a super clever person with words, so it is what it is. The Exposure part is kind of a pun). Until next time! Blessings, Sarah
