I'm a planner all the way. I've actually surprised myself lately by hearing the words "we'll just see how it plays out" come from my mouth in regards to an upcoming weekend trip! Who is this girl? I definitely love to-do lists because they help me remember what I want and need to do and help me not procrastinate (as much :) But if they become a taskmaster and lock you in an iron grip, that's not a fun place to be. Enter "ta-da" lists. I did not make this concept up. I got it from Phylicia Masonheimer and I don't know if she created it or got it from someone else. Regardless, this is a method in giving grace.
There are days when life just hiccups. You had a to-do list and maybe it wasn't even very long, just four or five things, but only one or two or maybe NONE of them got accomplished. Things happened. A kid got hurt or sick. A major appliance broke. A friend or family member had an emergency and you needed to be with them. Usually hiccups in our days are not pleasant things and then on top of it, we feel like we "failed" the day because nothing got done, or not as much as we hoped. This is when we need the "ta-da" list. "Ta-da" is what we say to little kids or what they say to acknowledge or announce an accomplishment. It marks completion. So maybe your list of things you wanted to get done didn't happen, BUT SOMETHING ELSE DID! You don't ignore your list to do nothing. Something else got done but it wasn't what you planned. So write it down. Did you cuddle with a sick kid and read them books? Did you cook a meal to take to a friend who needed it? Did you do research for a new washer? Were you the one sick and so you just rested as much as you could? What did you do? Write it down and CHECK IT OFF! This is a mental game. Maybe you don't care if there aren't check marks next to all the things but a lot of people do. It can help tremendously to see in black (or purple or green or blue) and white just exactly what did get done today. More than likely, the things you had scheduled were important and needed done, but can wait a day or two. Take the grace. Throw out the "to-do" and relish the "ta-da."
