We live in a world of microwaves, Netflix, instant messaging, and Amazon Prime. Fast food, convenience stores, and the Internet. All these things have created an urgency in our lives. We expect things to be fast and convenient. There are a lot of good things with our modern technology and I am very grateful for them. However, I would propose that this "instant" lifestyle is not natural and makes it harder on us when we have no choice but to wait. There are several things in my life that have opened my eyes to the fact that nature is not instant. It requires patience and time. The first thing is my struggle with my hair. I have really oily hair and for years, I've had to wash it daily. This made it very challenging to do anything with, as it takes a long time to dry (naturally :). I started hearing about ways to train your scalp to be less oily and I was intrigued. Did this not have to be my life? I started on a journey that has probably taken about a year and a half at this point. I'm not exactly sure when I started. I can now wash my hair every three to four days and it is so wonderful, but in between was a lot of steps. It took time.
The same is true for healing scars, acne, and split ends. I'm still working on these things, though they are much better than they were. The healing takes time. I wish it could be faster, but it's not. When I look around at our world, I don't see things that God created to work instantly. He created them instantly, but now things grow and change over time. We have months and years. Crops take a season to grow. Even with all our technology, plants still take time to grow. I can't help but wonder if there is a lesson in all this. I know it can be hard for me to trust God in a time of waiting for something I want or desire. I wonder if waiting is much harder for us now than it was for past generations and cultures. Maybe not, but it's possible. I'm not the most patient person and I'm still learning to wait, but I have things in my life that are teaching me!! What about you? What things have you experienced that have taught you to wait?
