I know a lot of kids really dread high school while they're in it, but I happen to think that if you put just a little time in, you would probably find some great moments! If you're out of high school, I bet distance has brought to mind things that you actually miss! High school is definitely a time, but I believe there is always something good to be found if we look. That being said, it can seem like high school is when life starts to hit us with all the junk the world has to offer. I think that is because we are more aware and are being exposed to more of "real life". I can name you a lot of hard things that I experienced in my childhood/elementary/middle school years, but the first life-altering, earth-shattering event happened in high school.
When I think about high school, that event - the betrayal by an authority figure that I trusted - looms large. It affected my life for years after. But as awful and hard as it was, what I remember equally was how loved and cared for I was by my community. They asked what I needed and gave it to me. Just two years later, my granddad developed a brain cancer and died. That was a really hard time for my family but that same community wrapped us up and showed us love. When I think about what it means to be the hands and feet of Jesus, I think of those families and what they did for us. (That year, because Granddad died around Thanksgiving, I got to spend the holiday with my out-of-state cousins for the first and only time in my life. I also got to take a photo with all of my cousins for the first - and so far only - time.) I lost friends and dealt with a lot of loneliness in high school. But you know what else happened during those years? I got to go to SpringHill Winter camps. I got to take amazing classes with friends, see one of my favorite bands in concert, threw surprise parties for two of my friends and have them throw one for me. I went to the Grand Canyon and Mackinac Island. I started getting college credits, wrote songs with my friend, laughed, loved, and was loved. I celebrated ten years of friendship with one of my best friends, did a year of Bible quizzing, and got to watch my brother play baseball on an amazing team. That's just what I can come up with off the top of my head. If I sat down and read through all four years of journal entries, I'm sure I'd come up with a lot more hurt and joy that I could share. But you get the idea. For some reason, pain and loss tends to stick in my memory more clearly than joy in most cases. There's probably a scientific reason for that, but maybe you've experienced the same thing. I hope what you see in this is that, even the worst things can have good in them and there is often a lot of good that you're forgetting when you let the painful things take center stage in your memories. Now I'd like to hear from you! What are some of the good and bad things from your high school years? Can you see any good in the bad memories?
