I always recommend printing out your photos. Why take them if you don't display them? But when it comes to printing, does it matter where you go? Well, yes and no. Really, it comes down to what exactly it is you are printing. If you are printing 4x6s and maybe even 5x7s, I typically recommend printing at Costco or Snapfish. For those kinds of prints, you're usually printing in bulk and the photos are for a poster board display or a photo album. The color difference and lesser paper quality are less noticeable and don't matter quite as much.
When it comes to things like canvases or large format prints, I will recommend getting those printed professionally. Display pieces benefit from the color-correctness and high quality paper that pro labs offer. If you're going to invest in a large display piece, you want it to look as good as it can and you want it to last. Everything from a professional photo lab is going to be the highest archival quality. From the ink to the paper and anything else involved in the product you're ordering, it's made to last and be passed down. One last benefit - it's quick and easy. Placing an order through your gallery is simple and it gets shipped to your house. Here is my recommendation: if you are printing anything over 8x10, you should print it with a professional lab. Even an 8x10, if you're planning to have it hanging prominently in your house, I personally would order it through the lab. However, I will always give my clients a print release because I value freedom in my photo choices and I want my clients to have that too. What questions do you have about professional printing?
