I have heard, from several different professional photographers, that it's best for your business to specialize in one or MAYBE two things. Just do weddings and newborns. Or weddings and seniors. Or seniors and newborns. You get the idea. I'm still pretty new, so I'm doing just about everything that deals with portraits of people. But that's a specialization in itself, is it not? I realize that it's kind of a cop-out, but I like to think that I specialize in people. Yes, I do five different kinds of photography, but look at what I don't do: weddings, events, landscapes, concerts, astro photography, travel, food, sports; I'm sure there are more that I'm forgetting.
If you want to get more specific, I would say that I specialize in family milestones. Yearly family photos; photos of your kids from birth to senior year. This definition is stretching what more established photographers meant by specialization, but for now, it's working for me. Someday I may drop a couple of items from my list, but I might not. Who knows? I love the sessions that I do right now. It lets me do a variety of photography with very different poses and locations, but it's all focused on people. Serving people, loving people, and telling the world, one photograph at a time, that each and every person is valuable. At the end of the day, every person is different and what works for some photographers won't work for others. I may one day only do a couple of kinds of photography, but I may keep my current list and even add more options, so long as they fit my mission of serving people and showcasing the value in humanity. I have a sticky note on my computer that says "is this true to me?" and the point is to not let what I think other people want influence my business. In this instance, not to just pick two kinds of photography because that's what someone said. But they are more established and successful, so I don't discount them entirely :)
