I really like lighthouses. I live in Michigan and there's probably a law that says you have to like them if you life here, but I like them anyway. I've grown in my appreciation of them as I've grown up but there was one thing that really made me latch on to lighthouses. One of the things I want to do with this business and blog is encourage you, my reader. I want to share things that have encourages or inspired me, in the hopes that they will do the same for you!
If you are a Christian or grew up around Christians, you probably have heard about the idea that we are the light of the world. The image usually associated with that is a candle. I never gave that a second thought but one day someone was talking about this idea and challenged the image of a candle in favor of a lighthouse. Now, when the Bible was written, a candle was all they had. And it does work as an illustration but a stronger illustration uses lighthouses. Why? Well, the point is that we shine in the darkness. Darkness is often associated with storms, rather than just night. IF you've ever light a candle, you know it takes very little to blow that candle out. A candle in a storm won't last two seconds. A lighthouse, by contrast, is built to shine in storms. That's literally its job. It's a fixed, shining beacon that guides ships to safety. The waves break against its base and the wind howls around it's tower but that light keeps shining. That's what we are to be. The storms of life may break and howl but we shine. We shine hope and peace and life to a dark and stormy world. The world can't blow us out. I found this really inspiring and also challenging. It makes me evaluate my life and how I"m living. Am I living like a candle that is blown out with the slightest breath of wind (trouble) or am I shining brightly in the fiercest storm? Many days and times, it's the former. But each day is a new day and a new opportunity to shine like a lighthouse. I hope you'll join me! Shine like a lighthouse!
