Owl City has been a top artist of mine for years. I don't know for sure how I was introduced to him, but it was probably my friend Molly. Since I've been listening to his music since 20080 or 2009, it's been really neat to see how his style has developed and now I've gotten to see him in concert TWICE! And this time, it was the tour kick-off show! Seeing Owl City live is one of the coolest shows I've ever seen. He is an amazing performer and I know that part of what is so amazing is that it's pretty much just him! This time he did have a drummer and a cellist but he did everything else - piano, drums, guitar, keytar, xylophone... I've seen other amazing shows but they have a lot of people. The fact that Adam Young can almost match them by himself is astonishing to me. He mostly played songs from Ocean Eyes and Coco Moon. I tried not to have an hopes or expectations about what songs he would play because there are just so many good ones through the years! He did "Hot Air Balloon", "Vanilla Twilight", "Cave In", and "Fireflies"! I think we sang more of "Fireflies" than he did :) It was really cool to hear everyone singing it as loud as they could! The encore was my favorite song from the new album - Vitamin Sea!! What is so cool about his music is that his style is still mostly the same (he does branch out to some new sounds, especially in Coco Moon) but his songwriting has changed a lot. The songs from the last couple albums are more storytelling in style. And he has gotten much less subtle about his faith. On this album, a lot of the songs have a moral point at the end. "Sons of Thunder" and "Field Notes" are the biggest ones like that and when he sang "Sons of Thunder", I think he got a little choked up! So take heart, wild one For there is a God Who loves you to death No matter what you’ve done So don’t lose hope Cuz He will lead you home Yeah we serve a God Who loves us to deathttt No matter what we’ve done So don’t lose hope Cuz He will lead us home Isn't that awesome?!?!?! And when he was doing the whole, "Hi, I'm Adam and I'm so glad to be here" bit, he said that he was thankful to Jesus Christ for letting him do music and be performing that night! I was super impressed. He's not preachy at all but he's also not shy about his faith. Another thing that was cool about the show was the variety of people. I saw people in their 40s and families with kids alongside couples and friend groups. And you know how a lot of times an artist attracts a certain "look" of people? Not Owl City. He's got the whole spectrum. I think that is super neat and says something about his brand. I'm kind of rambling and I don't even know who is going to care about this but I wanted to share some of my thoughts and impressions. Owl City is an amazing show and I highly recommend seeing him live if you can. I'll go a third time if I get the chance. If you actually read this whole thing, thank you :) Here are some terrible quality photos for you to enjoy! (I have a free gift for you!
