When we went out West several years ago, we went to Meramec Caverns. That cave system you could walk through. Penn's Cave, you rode in a little boat and drove through the cave. There was a lot more light in Meramec Caverns than in Penn's Cave. I'm glad I did it and it was cool (literally and figuratively), but during the ride I was a little uncomfortable, to be honest. At one point in the ride, they shut off the boat light and let you experience total darkness. I'm not afraid of the dark, per se, but I do not like the sensation of having my eyes open and not being able to see any light whatsoever. When the power is out at home and there is zero light in my room; there's just something about it that I don't like. So my solution? I just closed my eyes! You may think that's funny, but it's like my brain knows it's supposed to be dark with my eyes closed, so that's alright. I don't know if that makes sense, but it's what I did and what helps me. You go through the cave, out into a lake, and then back through. The guide shows you formations (like the Statue of Liberty and Cave Bacon). There is a cool light show at one point in the tour. I think they said the cave is 55 degrees year round. That's warm in winter, but kind of cool in spring and fall, and it would feel amazing in summer! Then we did the wildlife tour. You get in a bus with no windows and they drive you around to see some cool animals. We saw elk and deer; bison and timber wolves; cougars and a bobcat; longhorn cattle and we were supposed to see bears, but they didn't come out :) Oh, and these animals were not housed all together. It was neat just how close we could be to these creatures! I'd love to know if you've been to either Hershey's or Penn's Cave and what your experience was like. Or, if you've never been, what sounds like the most fun? This is the alpha wolf. His name is Samson. I'm not joking, this guy's name is Swiper!
