A dress worn by mom. A toy that was dad's. A blanket made by grandma. The high chair or cradle made by great-grandpa. Family heirlooms are precious. They hold so many memories and connect us to the past. I absolutely love it when people include historical items in their sessions!! I'll concede that it is generally easiest to include heirlooms in newborn or small children sessions but if you are creative, you can find a way to bring your family history into any session! Maybe the location is a spot that has significance to your family. Maybe your family has an activity that you like to do together and that involves heirlooms. A senior girl could wear jewelry that was her mom's and grandmother's and great-grandmother's! A senior guy might have a tie or cuff links or a watch.
Most people won't know the significance of a dress or blanket or chair. But you will. You will know and you will tell your children and one day, when the blanket is worn out or the chair broke, you'll still have the photos that show how you cherished it and tell your children and your grandchildren what that item represents to your family. Because really, that's what these items do for us. They represent memories and stories and jog our memories to tell them to the next generation. That's what makes them so valuable. I can't tell you how excited I get when a mom tells me that grandma made this blanket or that she wore that hat when she was a baby or that this toy was a favorite for her and her siblings growing up. If you tell me anything like that, I'm going to recommend we work it into the session in some way!!! Have you ever used a family heirloom in a photo session? What has that meant to you later on?
