I have a sticker on my computer top that says, "The best is yet to come!" It's a nice sentiment and could help someone look forward and not stay stuck in the past. I don't recall exactly what it meant to me when I put it on there, but it means something to me. I liked it. Recently, I noticed a contradiction with another quote I have taped on my computer by the keyboard. Which one is right? This little sticky note has a quote by Jordan Lee Dooley and says, "this is the good stuff."
This. Right here. Right now. Today. This is the good stuff. So if today is the good stuff, then the best is not yet to come. They can't both be right. The one quote has you look to the future to stay out of the past, but it also keeps you out of the present. The other keeps you out of the past and future, firmly in the present. I have a habit of not living in the present. As a child, I was constantly wishing ahead to the next fun thing. It's not that I didn't love what I was doing, but when it was over and life was back to "normal", I then focused on the next exciting event. I also have a tendency to wish to relive certain times of the past. I long for co-op and friendships and times when it was easy to see my friends because we all just had the same activities. Those times were good. They were great! Things are coming up that are going to be fantastic too. But I live in today. And today, this is the good stuff. The best is not yet to come, it's here now. I have been given today and today is good. This season of life is the good stuff. I'm not saying there are no problems, but guess what? There will be problems in the next stage too. There are always going to be problems. In spite of the problems, what will you do with this season? High school senior with so many decisions ahead - this is the good stuff. College student with tests and work - this is the good stuff. Fiancee or newlywed - this is the good stuff. Mom with little kids - this is the good stuff. Mom with older kids - this is the good stuff. Empty nester - this is the good stuff. We don't have to wish for the next season. Enjoy where you are because there is so much beauty and joy in where you are now. Today. This is the good stuff.
