You might have gotten the idea that I'm big on experiences and you'd be right. I am all about fun experiences that make memories and that's why I think that gifts that give an experience are such wonderful ideas! Growing up, one of our sets of grandparents always gave each of us kids a magazine subscription each year. Right off the bat, that means we get mail that is just for us!!! We got to pick the magazine and it sometimes changed as we got older. We still have many (most?) of the issues that we received. There are other things that you can now get in the mail (subscriptions like this are amazing) where you can get boxes of activities to make. Some are artsy and some are more scientific but all are fun and educational. Plus, the kid gets something in the mail delivered just to them :)
I have heard of grandparents gifting memberships to the zoo, museums (art, children's, and science), or fun regional places like Greenfield Village. Maybe it's not a membership but a trip. My brothers and I have birthdays very close to Christmas so we were getting ALL. THE. TOYS and my parents decided that they would get us one larger ticket item (we got a Wii one year) OR some kind of trip or experience (we went to Zehnder's Waterpark twice and this year our trip to the sand dunes was our birthday gift). The nice thing about gift experiences is that they don't add mess to your house (I suppose we do have a bunch of magazines but that's different than toys, right?) and they allow you create beautiful memories that will last a lifetime. I remember the trips and the fun at places like Greenfield and the zoo long after other toys are gone. What kind of experiences would you gift to someone? Have you ever give the gift of an experience?
