I have been using the same pair of work boots for probably a dozen or more years. They are actually my brothers' old boots that they wore when they were about 10 years old. It's quite amazing they have lasted this long and quite hilarious that I still wear them. Yes, they tease me about my small feet. But the boots are wearing out so it was time for something new. One of my problems with the boots is that they confined my feet. Now, you have to understand, I have never really liked socks or shoes and I go barefoot as much as possible in the summer. My feet like to be free. So hours in boots is definitely not my favorite thing.
A friend of mine introduced me to the concept of barefoot shoes. I'll admit, they look a little different, but when she explained how they are made to allow your foot to be in it's natural shape - i.e. there is more room for your toes - I was intrigued and I decided to see if there was a such thing as barefoot work boots. Turns out, there is!!! I found Anya's Reviews (linked above) and she had a post on about ten different work boots of various prices and options. I decided that Lems Shoes were the best fit for me (no pun intended) and proceeded to get a pair. Now here is the thing - the sizing for these shoes is a bit odd. My mom also wanted to get a pair so we ordered a size 9 (I am usually 8 or 8.5 and she is a 9) to see who it fit best. Then we would order the other pair up or down depending on who got the 9. We ended up deciding that she needed a 9.5 and they do say to order a half size bigger than your normal shoe size. They have videos and instructions on how to find your size and I ended up emailing them with questions once my "size" showed I should be a 10. Could I wear a 10? Probably. Do I need that big? I don't think so. I don't want to trip over my feet. These boots are very comfortable and if I have to wear boots all day, these are the best. The fact that they are zero drop means that it's the closest to being barefoot you can get while wearing boots. I will say, I've heard that you need time to adjust to barefoot shoes but I think that, because I go barefoot so much, and have for most of my life, my feet are more used to the idea of not having support. I mean, I wear flip-flops for probably about six, maybe, eight months of the year. If barefoot shoes intrigue you, check out Anya's Reviews. She is a great resource. Is the concept of barefoot shoes new to you or do you already have some? What has your experience been? Would you try barefoot shoes?
