Everyone knows about AirBNB, but I'd be willing to bet you haven't heard of A Candle In The Window. Today, that's going to change because I'm going to tell you all about it!!! A Candle In The Window is a Christian hospitality network. Members open their homes to travelers either for overnight stays or dinners and it's entirely free to the travelers! What?!
The goal of the network is to foster hospitality. It's an old tradition and stems naturally from the Christian faith, but it's fallen out of practice in more modern times. I don't know if it's a written or unwritten rule, but people generally don't ask to stay more than two nights and since people are usually traveling in order to do something, it's not like they are at your house all day long. We have experienced ACITW from both ends. I think we've had four or five different families/people stay with us and it's always been nice. We had a family who's son was in an American Ninja Warrior challenge around here. One family stayed with us on their way to Niagara Falls and again on the way back. We've stayed with so many lovely people and in so many situations! Our first experience was when we were traveling for my brother's baseball and we never even saw the people we were staying with! They were at work when we got there (they had a realtor-type lock box with a house key for us to get in), "retired" for the night when we got back, and we left again before they got up! It was strange. But most places, we have gotten to meet the people and often, have dinner with them. If you are interested in more information, you can visit their website. Maybe one day we will host you!!
