I think every family probably has at least one. That phrase that has become a part of family tradition. There are certain instances you use it and it has a special meaning just to you. My family quotes anything and everything that we find funny, but I can think of three particular phrases that we use and have become ingrained in family tradition. The first comes from my great-grandmother. My grandmother says that her mother said this frequently and I've heard it often growing up from my grandmother. The phrase is "I don't know what I would have done without you."
It doesn't sound special, but I don't think that the phrases often are. They take on meaning because of their history or how you say it. We say it generally when someone has helped us with something we consider a big deal, whether it was or not. It meant something to us to have the help and we really don't know what we would have done without the other person/people. The second one is from a movie called Trading Places. Unfortunately, there is a tone and a way of saying it that adds so much, but this is a blog post so I can't share that with you. (I don't know if the tone comes from the movie or if it's just what we do). When there is something (often food) that we don't like or sounds horrible, but someone else likes it, we say, "you have it". It's a funny way to disagree and everyone knows that you aren't interested in participating. My mom might say, "mmmm, pickled beets" and my brothers and I would say, "you have it". It gets used more than you might think it would. Last is just a word and we don't use it really anymore. Growing up, we often ate dinners with my dad's parents and after dinner, one of the adults would say something like, "is it time for Vespers?". The others would agree and my grandmother would bring out cookies. So for most of my childhood, I thought Vespers was the German word for cookies. (My grandparents and my dad would sometimes speak German to each other). It wasn't until I named one of my stuffed animals Vespers and told them I did so because it meant cookies, that they laughed and corrected me. Apparently it is something from an old TV show called ALF. I was kind of upset about that whole thing for awhile. Now I'm just fake mad :)
