It's not unusual for people to pay close attention to their makeup and hair when it comes to getting professional photos taken but what about nails? It's important to make sure your nails are nice before your photos, especially for senior photos!!! Your hands are often going to be visible and your toes might be too, if you have sandals or a shorter dress or skirt. At the bare minimum, I recommend removing all nail polish and just trimming up your nails. Maybe push back your cuticles but just make sure they look nice and cared for. A nice clear coat can give them a polished look without it looking like you have nail polish on, if that's really not your thing.
A French manicure can be a perfectly low-key yet elegant option and they make press on nails that look like salon manicures! No muss, no fuss, and the price is right. If you are someone who loves fun nails and nail polish, we might need to tone it down a bit for your photos. We want your nails to look nice and compliment but not compete with your outfit and makeup. I would pick light and neutral colors that work with your outfit. A lot of press on nails have fun patterns but I'd avoid those, unless you are wearing no patterns in any of your outfits. It's best to stick to solids for your nails and leave the patterns to your clothes. Want to see some examples? Check out my Nails section of my Senior Girls Outfit Inspiration board. But these aren't just for seniors!!!! However, when it comes to senior sessions, you only do those once, so paying extra for hair, makeup, and nails makes a little more sense than if you are doing it every year for family photos. If that is your thing, go for it! I know lots of people who do that and I know people who don't. It's such a personal choice. Of course, if you were looking for an excuse to get a mani/pedi, professional pictures are just the ticket!!! You will look your best if you feel your best and sometimes profession hair, makeup, and nails are what you need to feel your best! It can also remove the stress of having to do all that yourself, along with getting everyone else ready too.

Hi! I'm Sarah!
I am a natural light portrait photographer. I've been taking photos since 2014 and would eat a smoothie from Tropical Smoothie Cafe for lunch everyday if I could. Thank you so much for stopping by. I blog about sessions, things I'm learning, stuff in my life, and information for YOU, my client. If you like what you see around the site, I'd love to work with you! I'd also love to connect with you on Instagram. I'm @sarah_jayne_photo :) Archives
