"Don't call your brother Simba." "Girls can ride bulls too." "Leave the swans in the soup." These are just a few of the phrases on my mom's list of "Things I Thought I'd Never Have To Say As A Mom". This list hangs in our kitchen cupboard and we still to this day like reading through it and remembering the crazy things that prompted her saying these strange phrases. Dear mama, please write it all down. Write down the crazy things you say and the sweet, odd, hilarious things that your kiddos say. I write down things that my cousins say, other little kids, heck, even my friends!
These are links to a time that goes all too quickly and you won't get back. I don't say that to be depressing, but it's just like a photograph. Recording the simple phrase is a memory jogger that brings back a moment in time and lets the family reminisce about a particular event. Most of the things on my mom's list, I don't particularly remember, (and to be honest, most weren't said to me), but one I recall well is the one about girls riding bulls. We used to have a love seat in our living room and the two cushions came off. Our couch had three seat sections and the end two had footrests. What my brothers and I would do was put the footrests up, grab the love seat cushions, and pretend we were bull riders. (For the record, I have no earthly clue where we got the inclination to do this or how we knew what bull riding was). One person would straddle a cushion, stand between the footrests, and another would hold the second cushion in front, like a gate. We'd move the gate and the "bull rider" would start jumping up and down all over the living room. (I'm laughing at our younger selves as I write this). For some reason, one day my brothers decided that I couldn't do it anymore and I got upset. In settling the argument, Mom said, "girls can ride bulls too." We have many more like this and I have started a list of the funny things my brother says (of which there are many). It's a simple thing to do and it brings so much joy and so many memories. I know that many moms are overwhelmed, but it can be as simple as a note or voice memo on your phone, just to get it written down. In a quieter moment, I'd recommend writing it down in a journal or notebook of some kind, just to have it in a physical form that others can read too. Enjoy the funny moments and laugh at the weird things your kids' actions prompt you to say. They become treasured memories.
