I'll confess that I've not really looked into photography quotes much, but I've found several that really say my 'why' well. One of them is by Alfred Eisenstaedt: "It is more important to click with people than to click the shutter." This quote stood out to me because I believe people are the most important part of my job. I am primarily a portrait photographer, so without people, I can't do my job! But it's way more than just the people making the photograph. I can do a session and deliver thirty technically perfect photos, but if I didn't connect with my client, then the session was a failure. If they didn't have a blast getting their picture taken and they didn't love working with me, it really doesn't matter how great the photos look.
I think this quote extends to way more than photography and clients. I grew up with no social media. I don't have the mindset of recording and posting everything I do. When I'm out with my friends, I probably won't have anything to post to Instagram. I'm not judging people who do this, but it's just not me. I want to connect with people. There's something interesting I noticed when I was shooting my brother's high school baseball games. When I spent most of the game with my eye on the viewfinder, I got a very narrow experience of that game. It's a dramatically different way to take in a game. I had to be intentional to step away from the camera sometimes. Did that mean I missed some cool moments? Yes. But I wasn't getting paid to capture every moment; I was doing it for fun. If you follow me on Instagram, you've probably seen all the videos on my stories of some cute little kids. It might appear that all I do when I'm with them is video and take pictures, but really, I enjoy the moments more than I record them. I might record when something funny starts happening, but then I set the device down and just enjoy it. People and the moments you spend with them are the most important thing. I truly believe that. A photo or video holds a moment forever, but those moments only exist because of time taken to build that relationship. Photographers, I encourage you to put down the camera sometimes and just experience the moment. We can get so caught up in capturing memories that we don't make memories! Take some time to connect and "click" with people, whether you're a photographer or not. If you think about it, pop back in and let me know how it goes! Do you agree with this quote and my thoughts? What has your experience been? Blessings, Sarah
