We have two fun traditions that I believe started at least when my dad was a kid. The funny thing is, as we got older, we kids began forgetting to do them and my mom said maybe it wasn't worth doing anymore and now we try really hard to remember them :) Between the three of us, someone usually remembers. On our Christmas tree there is a tin little drummer boy who is hollow like a Russian stacking doll, but there are no other dolls inside. Our parents fill him with Hershey kisses (milk and dark :) and put him somewhere else on the tree from where he'd been all month. Then we have a "scavenger hunt" to find him.
Also a part of our scavenger hunt is a cloth basket that has quarters in it. I think there are $2 in quarters for each of us. I'm not sure what our parents did when we were little, since there are three kids looking for two things, but now we are old enough to not care who finds it, we are just happy to find them. My family is German on my dad's side and there is a German tradition of a pickle ornament on the tree. Tradition says that the child who finds the pickle gets an extra present. We have a pickle on our tree but I can't ever recall doing the extra present. Do you have any traditions like these? Are you part of a family that did the pickle tradition?
