I can't even tell you how old I was when I started making these cookies with my Oma for my Grammy. They are quite possibly my Grammy's favorite cookie so I started making them for her every Christmas. Some people call them Springerle cookies. I usually call them anise cookies. Either way, they are only for a select group of people. They taste and smell like black licorice and when they are baked, they are ROCK HARD!
I do not like them at all. Every year I taste the dough to see and every year I think, "you have it!". (That's a family line :) As this tradition has gone on, I've tried to come up with clever ways to disguise what I'm giving her. She expects them, but doesn't know how she'll get them. I'm not sure I've tried the box-inside-a-box trick yet. Maybe this year. My grammy dealt with mouth cancer and so for several years, she couldn't have such hard cookies. The first year she could have them again, I'm pretty sure she cried :) These cookies are a mess to make, but she loves them and it's an easy thing to give her that she really likes. Do you have special recipes that you bring out this time of year? Did you grow up baking with your grandmothers? I love to get new, delicious recipes, so please send them along!!!
