Advent calendars come in a wide variety of themes. Until this year, we've always done four different ones, with varying degrees of spirituality :) We have a cloth calendar with pockets pinned shut. There is one for each day from December 1st to the 25th. Each day, we pin an ornament or object to the Christmas tree above the pockets. This is the Advent calendar my mom used when she was little. My brothers and I have started a new way of doing it where we put our hand in and feel the item and guess what it is before pulling it out. When you've been doing it as long as we have, something's got to be done to shake things up.
The one we stopped doing as of this year was a wooden one. There were 24 little boxes with a tiny wooden figure that could be hung on pegs above the boxes. Then you read a short description about the figure. It was geared toward younger kids so we finally asked Mom if we could stop doing it. Our Oma gets us chocolate calendars every year. I think it's a German tradition. Each day has a little piece of milk chocolate under the flap. (I totally think they need to make a dark chocolate version!) Probably our favorite one is our Muppets Advent calendar. It's a retelling of The Gift of the Magi, but with the Muppets characters. Why is it so awesome? Because our dad does ALL THE VOICES!!!! He's so good at it and it's absolutely hilarious. What kind of Advent traditions do you have? In the last couple of years, we've read Jotham's Journey and the other books during Advent. Have you ever read them? I'd love to hear about what your family does during this time of year.
