Some of my all-time favorite books are ones that are deep and have a message or have complex characters. I love that fiction can help me see myself and the real world more clearly by putting things into a pretend world. Sometimes seeing a character think and work through something can help me see it more clearly myself. Have you ever experienced that? The Ravenwood Saga by Morgan L. Busse & The Dancing Realms series by Sharon Hinck. Both of these books look at what happens when good gifts are twisted by evil. You have fantasy worlds, good versus evil, but there are powerful journeys of discovery for our main characters as they search for the truth in the lies they've been raised to believe. While similar in many ways, both series are unique and approach their messages a little differently.
Books by Joanna Davidson Politano. In particular A Rumored Fortune and The Love Note. In learning about vineyards, I got so much insight into Jesus' parable of Him being the vine and us the branches from A Rumored Fortune. Tip: DON'T skip the little blurbs at the beginning of each chapter, for that is where the wisdom of the message is clearly developed. The Christy Miller/Katie Weldon/Sierra Jensen book series by Robin Jones Gunn. I have found myself relating each of these girls in different ways at different times in my life. Gunn has her characters go through common life experiences and struggles that we all can relate to, even if our exact circumstances aren't what are described in the books. These are geared more towards teens but the Christy series for sure goes into adulthood. Paige Alder trilogy by Erynn Mangum. I think the target audience for these books would be college-aged girls. They're not really deep and yet, there is a ton to learn from Paige's life. Paige is an early 20-something who is trying to make her way and find her way in the world and she has a lot of lessons to learn. Books by Dee Henderson. Her characters are so raw, so real you can feel their struggle. Deep, complex characters draw you in. Full Disclosure is one of my favorite books ever. I would say these don't teach a message per se, like the rest, but they are so well-developed that I feel like I've learned something from the characters. I love fun, light books and my action/suspense, but I do love to read books that help me think about things that I face. It's amazing to read a book and the characters say the same things my heart says. If an author put that in a book, then surely I'm not the only one thinking and feeling these things! What is/are your favorite book/books with messages?
