I'm coming to you today with an easy way to track your mileage for your business! If you have a business and need to track miles for tax purposes, AND if you use a planner for your events, then this tip is for you! First, every time you go anywhere for business, highlight that event in your planner. I personally use a purple colored pencil. For this to work, you need to make sure you put EVERYTHING work related into your planner. The bank, the post office... if you went there because of your business, put it down and highlight it.
Then, at the end of the year, you can easily flip through your planner, stopping at the highlighted entries, and marking down each place. I have a GoogleDoc with my common shoot locations and other regular places I go. I type the number of times I went to each place and, since the number of miles it is from my house to that location is already in the Doc, I just have to multiply the miles by the number of times! This takes a bit of upfront work to set up, but since I have started using it, which is pretty much day 1, it takes me less than half an hour to do the whole process. If there are no new locations, it's an even shorter process. How do you track your mileage for your business? If you have any questions about my process, let me know!
